Kaci Young

Kaci may be the sweetest young lady ever! Her mother and brother accompanied her during her shoot and also helped me with holding the reflector and scrim.

We met at East High and went into the gym to get some cool shots of Kaci in her volleyball uniform. Then we went to the Botanical Center for some outdoor shots with there beautiful flowers.
After we were finished there we went back to the studio for her indoors. We got some great pictures of Kaci and her brother. The two of them have an amazing relationship. They are the closest siblings I think I have ever seen. You can just tell when you are around them that they truly enjoy each others company.
As they were leaving Kaci said that one of my examples on the wall was her niece and come to find out one of my closest friends sister-in-law is Kaci's SISTER! I think I say "It's a small world" on a weekly bases.

Stacie Brown

Wow, Stacie is absolutely gorgeous! When I met Stacie and her mother at the indoor shoot she was worried she may not photograph well. She told me that she disliked most pictures of herself when she was younger. Yes, I am talking about the same girl who's image is above.

I had such a nice time talking to the two of them and learning about Stacie's family, hobbies and aspirations. It was interesting to find out how hard these young ladies practice and train for there softball team. They obviously work very hard and are very dedicated. Stacie brought her catchers uniform and we had allot of fun with that.

A few days later I met Stacie and her mother at Valley Junction for her outdoors. I think is was in the upper 90's but we managed to get some great shots. Then we ran over to the Botanical Center for some shots with flowers.

I really enjoyed working with the two of them and I hope everyone loves Stacie's images.

!!!! SO YOUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE !!!!

A very wise man and one of my most important mentors once told me "If your house was on fire and your family and pets were safe what else would you save?"

Let me give you a little background on how this conversation started....I was working at a local photography studio and had just finished up showing a family there portraits and helping them choose what sizes they wanted. It was very hard for me to tell them "the 20x24 with a frame cost (x) amount". Which in my mind seemed like so much money. So I decided I would discuss this with my boss. After expressing to him my concerns he went on to explain to me that the value of a portrait is priceless. You would not bat an eye at spending thousands on a new refrigerator, furniture, art, etc....but if your house was on fire those items would not even be near the top of your list of things you would save.

That was a huge eye opener for me and I will never think of portraits the same way. The value of your portraits can not even be measured by price. They are captured moments in your families life that can not ever be duplicated. They are handed down from generation to generation and are treasured for decades.

I know that this is a less than pleasant way to explain this but this is what it took for me to understand and I just wanted to share it.

Since I have had my own family I have tried so hard to get a good family portrait ... but we are just not ... "THAT" ... family so to speak!! With 3 crazy dogs 2 kids under 6 and Cody and I not exactly being super models I was just never happy with what I ended up with. this kills me as a photographer!!! So I decided to think outside the box of what are traditionally called family portraits and this is what I came up with!! Being that when we were all together someone was always looking down, eyes closed, drooling or crying I knew we had to do individual photos somehow so I went to babies-r-us and bought these big letters!! We did a shot of each of us holding a letter of our last name.. I'm not totally done designing it yet but this is the just of it.. I will eventually print these each one as a 20x20 and hang them on my family room wall making a huge fantastic piece of wall art!!! It just goes to show you don't always have to go with TRADITIONAL or be THAT family to get a beautiful portrait of your family!!! think outside the box

Our gift to the Animal Rescue League

So as many of you know Cody and I are HUGE!!! animal lovers !! We were just chatting one day about giving gifts and that true gifts are given not expecting anything in return! We talked about what was important to us... we donate our photography to many charities that contact us every year but we have never searched out a charity that we truly feel passionate about.. So we decided that we would contact the animal rescue league of Iowa and ask them if there was anything that we could do to help all there wonderful animals find good homes!!! The ARL was quick to respond that they really needed to update some portraits of there staff and also get some shots of a few of there dogs for a special program that they are doing. Being such an animal lover I was super excited to get out there and make new Relationships with these FANTASTIC people and the animals they spend there days caring for... IT WAS SOOOO FUN !!!! and I found out many things that I did not know about there facility. The ARL has a farm area for horses and other barnyard animals and that they also have a training center were they not only offer classes to the public but they also work with there current residents to help them in there transition. Oh yes, and cats apparently can learn basic commands like sit, lie down, etc.. I'm am so happy that this worked out and I can't wait until I can go back!!
